Remember the uproar over Janet Jackson’s “wardrobe malfunction”? That incident introduced a new term into our lexicon. Making news at the AMA’s, Kate Hudson had a near “wardrobe malfunction”, big deal. On a grander scale at the AMA’s was an example of “culture malfunction”. Adam Lambert’s AMA performance was a perfect example of the state of today’s culture and why we’re in the shape we find ourselves.

Adam Lambert, the openly gay, runner-up on American Idol had promised that his AMA performance would be “sexy”. After all, sex sells, doesn’t it? Adam Lambert is just one of a slew of virtual nobody’s thrust into the public eye after finding a voice on “American Idol”, I know you’re as thankful for that show as I am.

During Adam Lambert’s AMA performance he kissed a male musician (I mean really kissed), simulated sexual acts with male and female dancers and to boot everyone on stage was dressed as if they had just walked off of Bourbon Street in New Orleans.

Adam Lambert’s AMA performance was so risqué that it was deleted from the AMA broadcast on the West Coast. Kudos to whoever made that decision. Lambert says that the censoring of his performance amounted to discrimination. Oh please, cry me a river.

Performer’s, and I use that term lightly, like Lambert have no regard for the sensitivities of fans and casual watchers of programs like the AMA’s or MTV’s Video Music Awards or any other venue in which their “talents” are showcased. Our culture has become so desensitized to sexually explicit material that they feel obligated to raise the shock factor every time they perform. No doubt this is what prompted Lambert to make such a ridiculous spectacle of himself. Whatever happened to the days when a performer would simply appear on an awards show and sing their current single? Those days are apparently gone.

There are no real performers with talent left anymore; just wannabe media whores like Adam Lambert, Lady Gaga, and Kanye West who feel their worth is measured by how much they can shock us. Adam Lambert’s AMA performance was proof of this sad fact. So put on your makeup dude, I don’t really care, I won’t be watching anyway.
