GLAAD: CBS Gay Double Standard Over Adam Lambert Kiss
Looks like the Adam Lambert controversy heated up just a bit. After his risqué performance the other night, and fielding complaints, ABC cancelled Lambert’s appearance on “Good Morning America”. CBS happily picked up where ABC left off and booked Lambert on “The Early Show”. Unfortunately for CBS they decided to run footage of “the kiss” but blurred it out. GLAAD (Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) says CBS showed a double standard when it comes to openly gay performers.
Now CBS, trying to capitalize on Lambert’s publicity of the moment, find themselves having to fend off a group that they would hope would be their allies. No way CBS wants to offend GLAAD; but they did. Don’t feel bad CBS, it’s probably not real hard to offend gay and lesbian groups these days. As a matter of fact, I probably just did.
In charging CBS with the gay double standard, GLAAD compared the Lambert kiss to the famous Madonna Britney Spears kiss which ignited controversy of its own. The group said CBS had no problem playing unedited versions of the Spears Madonna kiss but for some reason decide to forgo showing Adam Lambert kissing a male keyboard player. A spokesperson for CBS said:
“The Madonna image is very familiar and has appeared countless times including many times on morning television. The Adam Lambert image is a subject of great current controversy, has not been nearly as widely disseminated, and for all we know, may still lead to legal consequences,”
Yeah right, legal consequences; ABC wouldn’t go after Lambert legally if you held a gun to their head, especially now that they’re seeing their colleagues at CBS being trashed by GLAAD. CBS isn’t the only problem for Adam Lambert though, many gay rights advocates are blasting the “American Idol” runner-up for setting back the gay marriage movement. They say that many mainstream Americans picture the gay lifestyle exactly how Lambert portrayed it at the AMA’s the other night. Touche.
